Experts believe we could witness the extinction of the orangutan in the wild in as few as 25 years.

However, there are orangutan conservation projects making a positive impact in the field, staffed by heroic and dedicated people. The Orangutan Conservancy supports these projects that protect both wild and rehabilitated orangutans, as well as their habitat.

  • Wild Orangutan Protection
The Orangutan Conservancy helps conservation projects that are working to protect the forests and to stop the destructive impact of logging. These projects also fight poaching and help communities develop long-term plans for alternate sustainable incomes.
  • Orangutan Reintroduction
The Orangutan Conservancy supports reintroduction centers that help confiscate captive orangutans, give the ex-captives health care and assist them in developing skills necessary for forest life. After extensive care the animals are released back into the forest to live as wild orangutans. The centers are a critical element in law enforcement efforts as they provide refuge for the orangutans and other creatures that are confiscated during raids.
  • Education
The Orangutan Conservancy promotes conservation educational programs and awareness campaigns in Malaysia, Indonesia and the United States. These programs include the development of films, children’s books, school curricula and instructional materials.
  • Research
The Orangutan Conservancy funds research projects that directly benefit the conservation of the orangutan.
